Janoel-48 Operation Instructions

Instructions:

Testing your unit for the first time:

1.       Connect the egg turner plug to the control plug inside the egg compartment.

2.       Connect the provided power supply to the front of the unit and your power source.

3.       Turn unit on.

4.       You will hear an alarm sounding due to low temperature/humidity.

5.       Press any of the green buttons to cancel the alarm.

6.       Lift incubator lid (caution egg turner connection plug/wire), fill water channel with ½ cup water.  Close lid and  the humidity reading will increase.

7.       Let the unit run for 2 hours, this will allow egg turner to turn once and the temperature/humidity readings will be stable.

8.       Place another thermometer inside the unit to compare temperature reading with unit digital reading display.

Setting the temperature.

1.       Push “SET’ once.

2.       Push “+” or “-“ to select the desire temperature.

3.       Push “SET” once more to exit.

Adjusting Unit parameter settings.

1.       Press and hold “SET  for 3 seconds.

2.       Push “+” or “-“ until code appears in the temperature screen reading.

3.       Push “SET”.

4.       Push “+” or “-“ to adjust to your desired setting.

5.       The unit will return to display setting within a few seconds.

Temperature alarm parameter settings

The temperature alarm is factory set to sound a 1°C over or below the set temperature.  This is sufficient and you do not need to make any changes to these settings.

1.       Low temperature alarm parameter setting = AL

2.       Higher temperature alarm parameter setting = AH

Humidity alarm parameter settings

The humidity alarm is factory set to sound at 45% humidity.  This is sufficient and you should not need to make adjustments to these settings.

1.       Low humidity alarm parameter setting = AS

2.       By filling both water channels the humidity should rise to 60% dependent on the local humidity levels and the time of year.

3.       Day 1 through Day 18 the humidity should measure 55% area.

4.       Day 19 through Day 21 the humidity should measure 60-65% during the hatch.

Note:  If you want a low humidity incubation hatch, adjust the humidity alarm parameter setting AS to 10%.  Depending on the room humidity, you will add only a small amount of water 30ml or 1/8 cup to water channels to begin with and  add 15ml when the humidity drops near 10% to maintain a 45% humidity.  Once the hatch begins do not take the lid off the incubator until you think all the chicks have hatched.

Note:  If you want a dry incubation hatch, adjust the humidity alarm parameter setting AS to 1-2%.  The humidity reading will be low depending on the room humidity level for Day 1 through Day 18.  Day 19 through Day 21 the humidity should measure 60-65% during the hatch, therefore add 30-60ml of water to the water channels.  Once the hatch begins do not take the lid off the incubator until you think all the chicks have hatched.

Calibrating temperature sensor reading

The thermometer correct reading is set at 0°C.  The reading given by the thermometer can be adjusted if you find that the temperature reading is incorrect using a calibrated thermometer.

1.       Calibrating the temperature sensor measurement = CA

2.       Press and hold “SET” for 3 seconds.

3.       Push “+” or “-“ until code CA appears in the temperature screen.

4.       Push “SET”.

5.       Push “+” or “-“ to adjust to the correct measurement.

Note that the adjustment is the difference between the thermometer reading and should be with “-“ if the temperature reading of the incubator is too high and normal value (indicating + value) if the incubator reading is too low.

Using your incubator

1.       Test incubator to see that it is functioning properly.

2.       Connect egg turner.

3.       Fill water channel to desired humidity level.  Usually ½ to 1 cup at the beginning.

4.       Set eggs with pointy side down.

5.       Close incubator lid, turn switch on.

6.       Press reset button (left green button) to reset and start the day counter from “0”.

7.       Watch humidity levels and fill water channels as needed.

8.       Day 19 unplug egg turner and remove egg turner.

9.       Place eggs on the bottom grid.

10.   Fill both water channels to increase humidity.  Very important to ensure eggshells are soft enough for the chicks to break through shells.

11.   Avoid opening lid while chicks are hatching.  Opening lid reduces humidity level for unhatched chicks.

12.   After hatch is complete, clean unit with soap and water.  Avoid water contact to the lid, use air to blow debris away from the fan and heating element.

    1. Is the Humidity a least 45? If not you need to put more water in the two channels in the bottom tray. Then when the Humidty goes past 45 you can push the button on the right side of the machine. Do not push the reset on the left side. It is just for your day counter. I marked my plastic grating on top with a marker so I would know right where to put my water at. On day 19 your going to remove your eggs from the turner and place them on the plastic grate. Leave some room on one side so you can fold up some paper towels and lay there. On the last three days you want your humidity higher. So fill both troughs and wet the paper towel real good. Close the lid and wait for the peeps.

  4. I can't raise the temperature of mine. I've pushed the SET button and the + button. It is at 37.7 but in the incubator I've measured the temperature and it's at 36 inside. The CA button is at 0 and I don't know what to do.

  5. As you go through the settings and get to CA then push set and onto the + or - button to adjust the temperature. Have you tried the - minus button to see if the temperature reading will change. If neither + or - changes temperature settings then you may have a malfunction. If you aren't incubating eggs, try unplugging the incubator and see if will reset an internal malfunction, then restart machine.

    1. It's a gamble, if you paid a lot of money for the eggs then I would continue. My reasoning is I've had hens get off their nest for long periods and I thought the eggs felt cool, but they did hatch. If you have plenty of eggs to restart, then I may lean to that direction. Note on the plug-in, I've had this happen to me in the past and I think it loosens when we lift the lid several times during use.

Hello, I can not do to increase humidity, and fill the two channels and it does not work. I can do to increase humidity?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Cool water temperatures will provide low humidity levels and filling both channels is more than enough water. Add a little warm water and your humidity will rise. My experience is two full channels is too much humidity. Low level humidity levels works well for chicken eggs.

  16. I can't get the temperature to go above 36.2, even when the incubator is set on 39.5. What can I do?

    1. Let incubator run for 24 hours and measure temperature with a second thermometer to confirm your actual temperature. If heating element is bad, I haven't looked for a vendor who has replacement parts for this season.

      Delete
    2. Put a pillow or some thin insulation on top of the incubator. I have had this happen to a couple different 'bators and had to put the insulation on top. Most of the heat loss is out the top. Of course, leave vent holes open for air circulation. They aren't air tight but if you have a full 'bator, the air supply may be too low to sustain the birds. As they develop, they generate heat and humidity plus require more air exchange inside the incubator. Try to let any air holes open rather than covering them with insulation.

  17. for those of you with a problem calibrationg this incubator please note: If I set the temperature to 37.5 degrees centigrade AS SHOWN ON THE DIGITAL READ OUT my incubator would be running at approx 10 degrees lower than this.YOU MUST CALIBRATE WITH A MEDICAL THERMOMETER FIRST! pLACE THE MEDICAL THERMOMETER INSIDE THE INCUBATATOR AND TEST THE TRUE READ OUT ON THE MEDIACAL THERMOMETER AGAINST THE DIGITAL READ OUT ON THE INCUBATOR DISPLAY. NOW THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART: The "HS" settings on your incubator have factory presets which you must change in order to raise the temperature the the desired amount, only if your internal incubator sensor is off as much as mine, by some 10 degrees. So please look at section 6 of your user manaul and change these settings. This will allow you to increase the temperature to your desired temperature. Section 6 of the user manual is your fisrt operation if you HAVE to change settings for true calibration. You may have to change the "HS" setting or the "LS" setting if your incubator's digital display as as bad as mine.

    2. my machine does not do me well. At the first time I had 40 eggs in the machine, only 12 eggs hatched successfully, some few were half hatched and the chicks died. Some eggs showed no sign of hatching while they had premature chicks in them. For the second time out of 48 eggs I got only 14, the story is the same. Please help me what might be the problem!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Adding water is to maintain the humidity level within the incubator. When you add water will vary as the outside humidity plays a part as well.

May I suggest the dry humidity hatch on your next incubation. Read the options listed above in the instructions. I had the same issue and found I was drowning the chicks because the humidity was too high. Withhold adding water until the 19th day, then raise the humidity to 50%-60% and leave the lid on the next 3 days. Note the humidity may go down and that's ok without adding any more water. This method improved my hatch greatly.

  24. When using the auto egg turner; you'll want the small pointed egg end facing down. The large end of the egg is where the air sac is inside the egg. If you're not using the auto egg turner, then you can lay however many eggs you wish to incubate. Hand turn eggs a least twice a day. Note I have been gone over the weekend and didn't hand turn the eggs until I returned home and then roll the eggs and the eggs hatched.

  25. I am just setting up my incubator and have been reading comments on the success of a dry humidity hatch. I am just wondering if I have completed this step correctly. I have gone to the setting AC and reduced it down to 2 is this correct or have I made a terrible mistake. When I entered into the setting it read 55. I am in a location with a relative humidity of 51%. Thank you in advance. This will be my first experience incubating eggs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Did you mean AS for your AC? When you reduced the setting to 2, that will allow the incubator humidity level to drop to 2 before the alarm goes off to warn you of the low humidity level. The 51% humidity environment is good. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  29. f you used warm water when added, the humidity will rise to a high reading. This is okay, and as time passes the humidity level will drop to lower levels. If humidity stays high the chicks will look damp and may chirp a lot. If this bothers you, raise the lid slightly and allow fresh air to enter for a few minutes causing the humidity to drop and quiet the chicks.

  37. Hi,
First time placing eggs in an incubator and we are a bit lost!!! We have borrowed a Janoel Model No: 130140 from a friend who hasn't had much luck with it. She had been adding water etc with a very low hatch rate.
As we are first timers, I was wanting some advice on a "Dry Humidity Hatch". Is this a better option and how exactly would I do this with the Janoel Incubator???
We have hens sitting on eggs now but they are off and on all the time, not 100% broody. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as we'd love to do this with our kids but fear failing and having no babies hatch :(
    Kind regards,

  38. I use the Dry Humidity Hatch method all the time now. From day 1 to day 19 while the eggs are on the turning tray I do not add any water. When I remove the turning tray to begin the hatch on day 19 I will add water to the channel in the bottom of the tray. Place the eggs on the hatching platform, close the lid and leave the lid closed until the end of the 21st day.
By adding water daily, I have found this to drown my developing chicks as they peep the air sack right before hatching. Good luck
Your sitting hens are the best way, let them go to sitting constantly before placing eggs under them for the hatch.

  41. how to remove egg turner Janoel-48 Day 18 normaly mine start pipping on day 15 why?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pipping to hatch! I have had a few early hatchers as well in the past. Two things that may be happening are the breed of the bird such as small breeds and the temperature could be on the high side of the scale and this increases the hatch time. Once you notice the pipping do remove the egg turner and let the hatching begin. Do let all unhatched eggs have a chance to hatch up to the 22nd or 23rd day with those early pippers.

  47. I think you can get another egg turner motor from supply store and replace the one you have that is malfunctioning. I would place the eggs on the hatching floor screen and roll the eggs 1 time a day until the 19th day and then just leave the eggs alone on the hatching floor screen.
I've used incubators that didn't have egg turners and I only turned the eggs once a day and if I took a weekend trip the eggs never got rolled until I returned home, then I rolled them. Chicks still hatch by this method of rolling eggs once a day.

  50. Can someone help me... I have a problem. From 40 eggs it only hatch 15. In the other eggs are dead chicks. When I broke the egg that dead chick was in water and I have a feeling that in first 18 days the humidity was too high. I keep humidity 50-55%. Is that too much humidity in the incubator and is that the reason why chicks are dead inside the egg.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had the same problem at the beginning as well. Yes I think the humidity is too high (at least the eggs absorbed to much water in the air sac and when the chick peeped the air sac they drowned). On your next incubation don't add any water to the water channel until the 19th day. I have my humidity set at 0 and I did have to add 2 tablespoons to raise the humidity above 0 a few times this early spring.
Currently I have warm weather and my incubator is running at 29% humidity without adding any water to the water channels.

    1. I think if you keep your humidity set at about 30 percent right up to day 25 (for ducks), and then increase it using a wet paper towel and about 2 oz of water between both channels, - you want surface area, NOT depth of water - to bring the "H" through pip and hatch for the next 3 days without opening the cover, so 50 to 55 at lock down should suffice. If you watch the air cell development, that is your best clue. You can back off the water and let the egg get rid of any excess moisture, thereby increasing air cell right up to a week before lock down. You want to see an air cell equal to about 1/3 of the egg so the chick can maneuver into place. You need moisture at lock down so the chick/duck can pip the membrane, and you don't want to open the lid again until the hatch is complete, and your chicks are dry/fluffy. If you can get the "H" to around 55 to 60 in this cheap Janoel-48 incubator, and it holds together long enough to get through the hatch, well....best you can hope for. My power plug was so loose from new that it burned, and lucky I had another power cord (from a computer - same thing). A wire had to be re-soldered, and we did that within a few hours, then back up and running with no harm to the eggs at day 7! I like to run the temp on the low side (better than high) and agree with Bryan on people drowning the chicks with too much water. All the instructions out there are for the commercial type incubators, not this one! Those have more control over air flow too, and they often use a separate hatcher so it is not apples to apples at all. The best information I read was on monitoring air cell. That will tell you everything you need to know.

  63. How are you supposed to put water in the channels? Do you have to take the lid off and pour it down the side into the channels? Or do you try to squirt it in the little holes at the bottom - I tried this method, but it just spills on the outside?

    1. Good question: through the 19th day just lift the lid and add water to the channels, if a little gets on the eggs it won't hurt anything. One the 19th day add enough water to fill channels and leave lid on during the hatching. Consider the dry hatch method: water isn't added during the first 19 days.

After reading all of your information I have been doing the dry hatch method, not adding any water. So tomorrow on lock down I am planning to add water, when you say add enough water to fill the channels, do you mean all the cut out sections in the bottom? Like a cup of water? Thanks, Amy.

    4. Yes, fill the channels. On day 21 the channels maybe dry and if you feel the remainder chicks are slow to hatching you may want to add a couple tablespoons of water. The outside humidity maybe low taking away the water in the incubator. Good luck!

  65. HI, how often do I need to fill incubator with water? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  66. Depends on the method your using, if dry incubation you'll add water on the 19th day on lock down for the hatch. Otherwise if you're seeking a 50% humidity it may be daily or the next day when water will be added to maintain the percentage.

  72. Hi, the humidity reading of my incubator changes from 68 to 73% even without adding water? Is it a problem? I am using it for the first time. I have tried setting the humidity as recommended to range from 45 to 55%. I am based in Dar es Salaam, actually about 20 meters from Indian Ocean; could this be the cause why I get high humidity despite adjustments?

  92. When my chicks start hatching how long am I supposed to leave them in the incubator before I lift the lid to take them out and put them into my brooder box? I don't have any instructions but from what I have read I am not supposed to open it for three days. Won't they die if I don't get them out sooner?

  93. I've just started my JN8-48 up for the first time in a while. I can't get the counter and timer to reset and the egg turner doesn't seem to be working. I can hear a click when the timer reaches 0:00, but nothing happens. Last time I couldn't reset the timer, I hadn't connected the motor. Once connected, I could reset it. However, this time it is all connected, but nothing will work. Any ideas? I read something about a fuse. Where is the fuse located and could it be related? Thanks
